Description: Here is a really nice cathedral design ring featuring a round natural ruby and 28 genuine, natural diamonds. First a note on rubies. As a Graduate Gemologist, I can say that identification of a natural ruby versus a high-quality created ruby is one of the more difficult identifications a gemologist routinely makes. Identification of inexpensive flame fusion synthetic rubies is one of the easiest identifications we make. Still, I was told by a GIA instructor a few years ago that the most common synthetic gemstone that is submitted for identification to the Gemological Institute of America's lab by jewelers is a flame fusion synthetic ruby! Further, the trade assumes that all natural rubies are heat treated unless they are accompanied by a lab certificate or seller guarantee that they are untreated. A biproduct of this heat treatment is that flux from the process fills surface breaking flaws and improves clarity; the trade accepts this as long as the effects are minor. To further complicate matters, there are ruby-glass composite stones where major parts of a natural ruby are glass filled; the trade considers these to be simulated rubies. There are many honest sellers on eBay, but there are also many who misrepresent their gems; either out of dishonesty or out of ignorance (and many of these sellers have good feedback ratings). Caveat emptor (buyer beware)! This particular natural ruby is a darkish, strongly purplish red color with fair to good clarity and is of good overall cut. The ruby has been heat treated in the usual way with a minor amount of flux healing, but it is 100% genuine and natural. It is not completely eye-clean, but it is a very attractive deep red centerpiece of the ring. It measures 4.5 mm in diameter with an actual weight of 0.46 carat. Ruby is July's birthstone, but this ring is a joy to own and wear regardless of your birth month! There are 28 round, full brilliant cut, natural and unenhanced pave' set diamonds with a manufacturer's stated combined weight of 0.17 carat. These diamonds provide an understated elegance and really bring out the wonderful color of the ruby. The diamonds are graded at an average of J/K color and I-1/I-2 clarity with good overall cut. The mounting is by the huge wholesaler Quality Gold, style number Y10555WA. This ring has the very nice feature of being a solid, closed back construction. This makes the ring more comfortable to wear, and eliminates moisture being trapped under the ring which leads to skin irritations for many people. It is done in solid 14 karat white gold and is finger size 7, but easily sizable by any competent jeweler. The ring weighs a very substantial 4.0 grams, and is narrow; not much wider than the 4.5 mm gem at the top. A narrow ring like this would be particularly flattering to a shorter, stubbier finger as it will tend to lengthen the look of the finger. This ring is solid gold and unworn; don't be duped into buying a cheap gold-plated ring or someone else's worn-out castoff!
