1 Centavo 1965 Mo MEXICO (762F)

Description: Post-independence Mexico retained the peso of 8 reales until 1863 when the Second Mexican Empire under Emperor Maximillan commenced the minting of pesos divided into 100 centavos. The Second Mexican Empire of 1863-1867 commenced the minting of coins denominated in pesos and centavos. The restored Mexican republic under Benito Juarez and Porfirio Diaz continued the minting of centavo coins in base metal or silver, as well as gold coins in pesos. Throughout most of the 20th century, the Mexican peso remained one of the more stable currencies in Latin America. The 1 centavo coin was first minted by Mexico in 1863. During 1864, the Second Mexican Empire introduced a new 1 centavo coin. In 1869, two years after the disestablishment of the Second Mexican Empire, a new design for the 1 centavo coin was used, and in 1883, a short-lived design also circulated. New designs were introduced during 1899 and 1950. The production of the bronze 1 centavo coins ceased in 1949 and in 1950, Mexico introduced its final design for the 1 centavo coin. These coins were composed of brass. Until 1969, the coin had a diameter of 16 millimeters and a mass of 2 grams, but afterward, the diameter was reduced to 13 millimeters and the mass decreased to 1.5 grams.OBVERSE: Type I, the Mexican coat of arms with the bigger emblem at the top, supported at the bottom by a wreath and an eagle facing leftLettering: ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOSREVERSE: The wheat stalk at the center with leaves going to the sides and the denomination in numerals at the top-left, and the abbreviation for the denomination to the top-right with the date to the bottom-left and the mintmark to the bottom-rightLettering: 1 C. 1965 MoDesigner and Engraver: Lorenzo RafaelEDGE: SmoothMint mark: "Mo"Mint: Mexico City, MexicoMintage in 1965 Mo2 255 000Country Mexico Period United Mexican States (since 1905)Type Standard circulation coinYears 1950-1969Value 1 Centavo Currency Peso (1863-1992)Composition BrassWeight 2 gDiameter 16 mmThickness 1.25 mmShape RoundOrientation Coin alignment ↑↓Demonetized YesReferences KM# 417, Schön# 41
