Description: Souvenir note 100 Karbovantsiv in souvenir packaging, 2017, UNC, UkraineThis banknote marks the centenary of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917 – 1921 and the first Ukrainian paper money. It reproduces the design of the first Ukrainian banknote – the 100 karbovanets state banknote created by Heorhiy Narbut. The depiction of the trident on the banknote almost two months before the Central Council’s Coat of Arms Law was passed contributed greatly to the adoption of the symbol of Volodymyr the Great’s princely state on the coat of arms of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. The banknote also reflected the Ukrainian principles of state-building – the face value on the first Ukrainian banknote was written in four languages: Ukrainian, Russian, Polish and Yiddish. In this way, the young country declared its respect for the representatives of all nations and peoples that inhabited ethnic Ukrainian lands, proclaiming that they had freedoms and rights equal to those of the dominant ethnic group. The banknote has a size of 80 х 170 mm, and an issue number of 100,000 units. The main image on the front of the souvenir banknote is a reproduction of the front of the 100 karbovanets banknote designed in 1917; to the left of the image are the following legends: УКРАЇНА (Ukraine) (above), До подій Української революції 1917 – 1921 (to mark the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917 – 1921) (below); above the letter legend to the left is the image of the trident that appeared on the 1917 banknote. The main image on the back of the souvenir banknote is a reproduction of the back of the 100 karbovanets banknote designed in 1917; to the right of it are the following legends: УКРАЇНА (Ukraine) (above), До подій Української революції 1917 – 1921 (to mark the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917 – 1921) and 100/ РОКІВ (100/years) (below). Souvenir note 100 Hryven in souvenir packaging, 2018, UNC, UkraineThis banknote reproduces the design of the Ukrainian 100 hryvnia banknote, which was put into circulation on 17 October 1918. In the spring of 1918, the Ukrainian government decided to change the name of Ukrainian money from karbovanets to hryvnias. This was done in order to draw attention to Ukraine being an heir to the statehood traditions of Kyiv Rus. The 100 hryvnia banknote, designed by Heorhiy Narbut, featured the highest standards of artistry. In the center of the front of the note is a big wreath made of flowers, fruits, vegetables and wheat. To the left of the wreath is a woman dressed in traditional Ukrainian costume, holding a sheaf of wheat and a sickle. To the right of the wreath is a man wearing an apron and leaning on a hammer, around which laurel leaves are wound. The back of the note features a large cartouche made of a vegetable and fruit ornament. On both sides of the cartouche, which has inscriptions inside, are decorative columns. The composition is topped by a trident framed by a laurel wreath. The banknote is sized 80 х 170 mm. It is made of paper and features a watermark (the image of the trident). The main image on the front of the souvenir note is the front of the 100 hryvnia banknote designed in 1918, to the left of which are the following legends: НЕ Є ПЛАТІЖНИМ ЗАСОБОМ (this note is not legal tender) (vertically), УКРАЇНА (Ukraine) (above), До подій/ Української/ революції/ 1917 – 1921 (to mark/ the anniversary of the Ukrainian revolution of/ 1917 – 1921) (below). The banknote also features the trident, a historical symbol depicted on the 1918 banknote, and the banknote production year – 2018. Beneath, to the left of the main image, is the legend 100 РОКІВ (100 years) printed in optically variable ink. When the banknote is tilted, the legend changes color from gold to green. Near the right side of the note is a part of the gray-blue see-through register 1918, and the latent image 100 hidden in a brown and purple square. The main image on the back of the note is the back of the 100 hryvnia banknote designed in 1918, to the left of which are the following legends: УКРАЇНА (Ukraine) (above), До подій/ Української/ революції/ 1917 – 1921/100/ РОКІВ (to mark/ the anniversary of the Ukrainian revolution of/ 1917 – 1921) (below), to the left is the following vertical legend: НЕ Є ПЛАТІЖНИМ ЗАСОБОМ (this note is not legal tender), and a part of the blue see-through register 1918. The stylized images of Ukrainian flags glow yellow and light blue under ultra-violet light.
