These seeds, once germinated, will grow into a plant that responds to being touched. Its delicate leaflets will curl upwards when you brush them with your finger, similarly to a Venus Fly Trap. This plant is excellent as both an indoor houseplant as well as an outdoor garden plant: its pink, puffy flowers are beautiful to look at and its rapid leaf movement is entertaining to watch. These plant seeds are a perfect gift for the novice gardener and experienced botanist alike. * Germinating Mimosa pudica * Mimosa seeds can be tricky to germinate. The most common method is described below, however many more techniques can be found elsewhere online, I encourage you to research a few. First, scarify the seeds by rubbing them lightly against fine-grit sandpaper to help thin the seed coat. Afterwards, place the scarified seeds into hot water (not boiling, just hot to the touch, ~100F), and let them sit overnight. Replace the water with hot, fresh water the next morning. After soaking the seeds, they can be placed into starting soil, 1/4 inch deep. Make sure to keep the starter pots in direct sunlight, keep them warm, and don't let the soil dry out. Germination should occur within 2 to 4 weeks. Considering this longer germination time, planting the seeds in late winter to early spring is ideal. * Requirements for Mimosa pudica * Mimosas of all species enjoy high levels of light as well as acidic and well-draining soil. M. pudica is tolerant of draughts and cold weather, however it does best in warmer climates with infrequent watering. * Growing Mimosa pudica * In a large pot with soil mixed from one part perlite and one part sand, sow the swollen seeds two centimeters deep. They should germinate within a few weeks. Make sure to keep the soil moist during this time. As seedlings, Mimosas are prone to wind damage and should be kept out of stormy conditions as to not damage their fragile leaves. Water sparingly, only when the top of the soil has dried out. Once the plants have reached 5 – 10 cm tall, fertilization can begin. Give an equally-balanced 10:10:10 fertilizer in conservative quantities to the plant. Make sure to use your gardener’s intuition with this: only give the plant nutrients if it shows signs of deficiencies or slow growth, otherwise the plant may be shocked at this young age. Avoid fertilization in the fall or winter and focus on supplementing the plant in springtime. The plants will regularly need to be transferred to new containers as they grow. Be careful of the thorn-whips that form, they’re vicious!
