Description: About this coffee Ethiopia Yirgacheffe A group of almost 500 small-scale farmers, Negele Gorbitu is a cooperative of farmers who are located in south central Ethiopia in the Yirgacheffe region. On average, Negele Goribitu farmers are each working on about 10 acres of land. More than 90 percent of cooperative members farm organically, growing exclusively heirloom varietals of coffee. Guatemala Full City This excellent Central American coffee features notes of fruit, toasted coconut, caramel. It comes to Cafe Campesino from one of their oldest and closest relationships in the country that started it all for Café Campesino. APECAFORM (the Maya-Mam Association of Smallholder Organic Coffee Farmers) was established in 1992, with aid from the Catholic diocese in Guatemala, as part of an initiative to support the development of local, small-scale coffee farmers. Today APECAFORM is comprised of some 400 members, spread over 17 communities. APECAFORM members are 100% small-scale farmers upholding their Mayan roots, including deep respect for the land and holistic and organic farming practices, and preserving traditional culture and language. The majority of their members speak Mam, one of more than 20 languages spoken in Guatemala. Mexico Based in Chiapas, Mexico, Maya Vinic is composed of 656 farmer families who joined together after the 1997 Acteal massacre that took the lives of 45 of their community members. Inspired by the traditions of their ancestors, Maya Vinic operates with a respect for local language and culture, and a reverence for Mother Earth and traditional forms of self government. Farmers are based in the municipalities of Chenalhó, Pantelhó and Chalchihuitán.Cafe Campesino began sourcing coffee from Maya Vinic in 2002, when the cooperative exported its first container of coffee under fair-trade terms. We have always been inspired by the resilience, diligence and commitment to community Maya Vinic farmers have shown. In the past 17 years, we have seen the quality of Maya Vinic coffee excel, while cooperative leadership remained committed to getting more money back to farmer members. Maya Vinic now roasts and sells its coffee throughout Mexico, as well as from its own coffee shop in San Cristobal de las Casas. Sumatra French This coffee is produced by Kokowagayo, an all-woman cooperative of organic farmers. Kokowagayo was founded in 2014, after female farmers at the Permata Gayo cooperative wanted to apply their farming skills toward focused, female empowerment. At Kokowagayo, women manage all farming and business practices for their cooperative. As a result, members improve their business skills, earn more money and improve their quality of life.
