This book provides an opportunity to introduce various sword fittings from several European art museums. Many of these "sword fittings" were previously unknown in Japan and most of them found their way to Europe after the Meiji era's sword abolishment edict. This was a period when Japanese swords, especially exceptional sword fittings, became redundant and flooded the market. During that time, when Japanese fine art was highly valued by conscientious Europeans, the "beauty of sword fittings" was conveyed to Europe by individuals who appreciated Japanese art. The selection of pieces presented in this book is just a small fraction of those that exist. However, it includes exceptional works and rare reference materials that allow for appreciation. This book was originally published in 1971 under the title "Introduction to Tsuba Small Articles Appraisal" (co-authored with Wakayama Iida). The aim of this revised edition was to reorganize the content, with updated photographs and revised text due to the passage of time. The extent to which it can represent the beauty of sword fittings is a matter of the reader's judgment, but the intention of this preface is to serve as a guide for appreciation and appraisal and deepen the interest and understanding of sword fittings.
