Over the course of the last 50 Years we must have cut more holes than anyone on the planet whilst demonstrating “The Amazing Tile And Glass Cutter” and our diamond bits via trade shows all over the world, so we do have a little experience. The best setup is to have running water on the material and keep removing the hole saw / bit out of the hole every 15 to 20 seconds so no heat can ever build up, now for a lot of situations this is not possible so the next best thing is to just have a container of cold water next to you and keep removing the hole saw from the hole every 10 to 15 seconds and dip the hole saw cutting edge into the water. Hold a wet sponge against the bit while you are drilling will keep the mess down a bit and cool the bit too. Spray or force water into the hole / groove with a sprayer or wet sponge every time you remove the hole saw, this cools the bits and makes them last longer and stops the tile overheating and cracking. If you do not cool the hole saw, what happens is, the weld between the diamonds and the steel breaks down and so the diamonds become loose and fall off into the hole, so now you have diamonds rubbing against diamonds and so it burns up the hole saw so, Do Not Do That!!!Pro Tip #2 Spraying water onto the side of the bit while dilling, it will keep the side of the bit cool but if you only do that you will still burn up your bits faster as the side is not what does the cutting, the front of the bit does the cutting and the only way to keep this cool is to remove it from the hole and dunk it in water.Pro Tip No. 3 For small diameter holes where accuracy of position is not critical you can drill without a guide and just start at a 45 degree angle, start with the drill running before you touch the material, if you start the drill while you are touching the material you will get an initial kick sideways and not only will you not be where you want to be, you may also scratch or mark the material. When you touch down you will start to grind out a half moon shape in the material, this groove will be enough to hold the diamond bit in place while you bring it to the upright. Do not rush bringing to upright or the bit will jump out of the groove before you get to full level, try on a practice piece first until you get the hang of it, faster speed to cut the initial groove is better but still keep the bit cool as before.Pro Tip No. 4 If you are on a horizontal or level surface like on a counter top, or for purring a hole in a glass bottle, you can build a small ring around the area first with some plumbers putty or plasticine, this creates a dam / well that you can fill with water. This will provide a reservoir of coolant so you just need to lift the bit up to allow water into the groove etc. but if doing this on a granite countertop you still want to be dunking the bit in water.Note: Keep Water And Fluids Away From The Electrical Tools And Devices! If You Plan On Drilling A Lot Of Holes, We Highly Recommend Purchasing One of Our Steel Diamond Hole Saw Suction Guides. The Stabilizing Guide Uses A Powerful Suction Mechanism To Lock Onto The Surface Of The Material And Is Compatible With Hole Saws From 3/16" Up To 83mm.
