It was usually round and made of metal but occasionally of hardened leather or layers of wood. (Tarassuk & Blaire, p. 105). Bucklers were typically round and frequently between 8 to 16 inches in diameter,'Used from the 12th thru the 18th century, the buckler achieved a deserved reputation as both a defensive and offensive arm. Indispensable in both classical rapier play and I.33 sparring, it has become an essential part of the modern swordsman`s equipment. Crafted in 14 gauge steel, all of our GDFB bucklers have rolled edges and come in three sizes to meet individual needs. This leather-covered version combines functionality and aesthetics. The steel tube grip and 14 gauge scalloped boss are both securely riveted to the body of the buckler. Diameter: 15"Weight: 5-1/4 lbsHandle is 5-1/4" long and offset for about 2-3/4" of clearance. With 5" diameter boss, designed for gloved and gauntleted hands. There are 5 different styles of bucklers from GDFB (see last photo to compare), and each comes in 9", 12" & 15" diameters. The 15" is in use in my Adria group principally for Shinai and steel fighting, and the plated design will hold up the heaviest blows. If you want a buckler or shield for HEMA sparring the GDFB are the best on the market. The various sizes are widely used for all styles of fighting. See photos I included with a couple of our knights on the field. The only complaint I've ever had about these is that they're heavy compared to some. What can I say? I mean, my sword weighs almost this much. I think I can hold a buckler up for a while. That's ok if you prefer to fight with a cute little polycarbonate one but good luck when your opponents start beating on you with heavy steel weapons :) I'm a collector and a weekend warrior, active in local groups.
