Description: I have here for sale a RARE seventeenth century Puritan book entitled HOLY OYLE FOR THE LAMPES OF THE SANCTUARIE: or Scripture Phrases alphabetically disposed; for the Use and Benefit of such as desire to speake the Language of Canaan, more especially the sonnes of the Prophets, who would attaine Elegancie and Sublimity of expressions, by John Clarke. Printed by Aug. Mathewes for Rob. Milbourne, London in 1630. Missing the last 21 pages (finishes on page 514 and there should be 535 pages). Also there should be an illustrated title page - that is missing so supplied in facsimile.Recently rebound in full black leather with with light brown leather title label with gilt lettering to the spine. The publication date is stamped on a similar colour label at the base of the spine. New endpapers. Title page has had some paper repair. Most of the pages have some staining and foxing but only the first and last few have wear to the edges. Incomplete text on page 513 where three words are missing. 514 pages, 20 cm x 15 cm.
