The treaty ended the First Anglo-Dutch War of 1652–1654).Two separate contemporary manuscript précis, in Italian and Spanish, with salient highlights from the Treaty of Westminster between Oliver Cromwell and the Dutch, which ended the First Anglo Dutch War in 1654.Two original contemporary manuscript précis, circa 1654, in Spanish and Italian, of the main points of the Treaty of Westminster (agreed between Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the English Commonwealth, and the States General of the United Netherlands, in April 1654). Each on a 'bifolium' [i.e. 4 sides on two conjoined leaves] of folio-sized contemporary laid paper, and both bearing the same continental watermark (of a papermaker in Genoa, Italy?) comprised of three stacked circles - containing a cross, and the initials 'TG' and 'A' - and surmounted with a tri-pronged crown. The first summary is written in brown ink in Spanish and headed "Nuevas / Capitalozioni della Pace fra l'Inghilterra e l'Olanda", to one side of first sheet only, and is docketed with similar wording to verso of second sheet. The second summary is written in Italian in brown ink and headed "Le Propositioni di pace, che fa la Republica d'Olanda alla Rep.ca d'Inghilterra", to both sides of the first sheet, in a different hand to the above, but again docketed to reverse of the second sheet with similar wording and in the same hand as the first. Each is additionally numbered to the upper right corner '81' and '83' in brown ink in a contemporary (or near contemporary) hand. Size: folio - each page 307 x 214mm (approx. 12 x 8 ins). Both bifolia have at some time been disbound from the same volume.Very Good condition. Light age-toning to paper. Very light scattered spotting if held up to light. Sheets conjoined at spine with binding glue, though starting to loosen. One watermark outlined in light pencil for clarity, but this could be easily erased. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely. These two brief summaries, in Spanish and Italian, state some of the pertinent points of the peace treaty which ended the First Anglo-Dutch War. The two documents may have been drawn up by an Italian diplomat or translator, possibly attached to one of the delegations involved in the negotiations. They vary in content, presumably in order to pick out salient points from the treaty of interest to Spain and Italy respectively. The Spanish version includes the stipulation that Dutch ships are required to lower their flags to the English when in English waters, in recognition of the Navigation Act of 1651 ["Los Olandeses baxaran las Banderas a los Ingleses en los mares Bretanicos"]. The penultimate clause stipulates that all rebels from the 'Republic of Cromwell' are to be expelled within 28 days ["Los Holandeses en 28 dias echaran de sus estados todos los reneldes de la Republica de Crombel declarados por tales"].The Italian text, with numbered clauses, refers to the payment of one million scudi by the Dutch to cover the cost of the war, and to trade routes with both the West and East Indies, the text ending "Questo e quello che mi raccordo di piu d'Importanza.'. The penultimate clause mentions the Council of Trent. An interesting pair of contemporary manuscript documents which shed some light on the broader diplomatic subtleties of the Treaty of Westminster. key words:
