This is the first volume of this work, a second volume followed in 1694. Bookplate to front pastedown has been covered with a Cholmondeley library plate. The bookplate belongs to one of the Cholmondeley family as it bears the family crest. The bookplate is likely to belong to either George Cholmondeley, 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley and The Earl of Cholmondeley or one of his descendants. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphres Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. Charles de Marguetel de Saint-Denis, seigneur de Saint-Evremond was a French soldier, hedonist, essayist and literary critic. He wrote only for his friends and did not intend for his work to be published, despite a few pieces being leaked in his lifetime. This work includes essays on the Roman people, the Wars of the romans, the Carthaginian war, of Tiberius and more. Translated and continued by English poet and literary critic, John Dryden. Dryden is also famed for being England's first Poet Laureate. CONDITION In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to spine and board edges.
