Description: Custom built model of a WW2 Spitfire Mk 2 (or 5) fighter plane. Along with the Hawker Huricane, Spitfires maintained air superiorty over the Luftwaffe and thus won the Battle of Britain in 1940. One of the most famous R.A.F. pilots of the era was Douglas Bader. Bader had lost both his legs in a 1930's flying accident but with artificial limbs fitted, he maintained his ability to fly. He flew both "Hurris" and "Spits" for the Royal Airforce during the Battle and later became a Wing Leader with 22 air victories and a number of "probables" to his credit. Ironically his lost legs may have contibuted to his aerial success. Normally in high G-force combat maneuvering, a pilot's blood supply is forced down into his legs and away from his head, resulting in light headedness and eventual blackout. Without lower limbs, Bader's blood supply to his upper body was better maintained probably giving him more stamina in high G situations. The code markings on this model, "D B" represent the personal initials of Douglas Bader, as was the custom for high ranking R.A.F. officers. His radio callsign name was "DogsBody" also a reference to his initials. This is a scale model collectors item to be handled and unpacked with care, not a childs toy to be played with! Has small and sharp parts that could break off if mishandled. Buyer should expect the possibility of small parts coming detached in shipment but model is well built and will be carefully packed (check my feedback) and damage is quite unlikely. I combine shipping. See my other auctions. Made and assembled in the U.S.A. Happy Bidding!
