Written in the original French. Bound in full calf. This collection contains Volume I-V out of a six volume set. Lacking Volume VI. This scarce work is comprised of the essays of French philosopher Michel Seigneur de Montaigne, one of the most significant thinkers of the French Renaissance. He is particularly known for his collection of essays, popularising this form of writing. Montaigne's various essays were published from 1580, largely inspired by his classical studies, with a focus on the ideas of Plutarch and Lucretius. The goal of this work was to portray humans, particularly himself, with complete frankness and honesty. Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I. With notes by French theologian, Pierre Coste.Bookplate of Irish philosopher and lecturer, Rev. F. Hutcheson. CONDITION Bound in full calf. Externally, very good, with slight rubbing to joints and extremities, with the odd patch of rubbing to boards. Slight bumping to the head of Volume V, with spine label lifting a little to III. Bookplate to the front paste down, with an ink inscription to the front free endpaper to Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with the odd handling mark or ink annotation. Ink inscription of J. Hutcheson to the title page.
