Description: [TRAVEL, HILL CATALOG, PACIFIC VOYAGES, EUROPEAN EXPLORATION, SETS] OROSIO, Jeronimo [Jeronymo] (Author) GIBBS, James (First translated into English by) 'THE HISTORY OF THE PORTUGUESE - During the Reign of Emmanuel; containing all their Discoveries, from the Coast of Africk to the farthest parts of China' their battles by sea and land....' London. Printed for A. Millar. 1752. First Edition. Two Volumes Octavo (5.0 in x 8.75 in). Bound in full dark brown 18th c. calf. Bindings well worn. Top board of Vol I detached but present. Both volumes lack title pages (we surmise this copy may have been bound without them or the title pages perished shortly after publication as a late 18th c. owner name in old gaul ink is on dedication page (of Vol I) and first text page (of Vol II)). Additionally, a later (but likely also 18th c.) owner 'H.B. Way' has his written name and printed initials in red in both volumes. All 12 books complete. Overall, good or better. Originally first issued in latin in 1571, this is a somewhat scarce and desirable copy of this first English translation which although lacking both title pages, is otherwise complete. Osorio, known by some as 'Portuguese Cicero' held high positions in the Church and attained access to some of the finest libraries of the day and utilized that access to research and author this work which details the expeditions, explorations and other accomplishments of Cortereal, Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Cabral and de Lemes (per Hill Collection Catalog p. 219) Please email any questions - Photo gallery
