America" featuring a Native American man in a variation of traditional dress with head dress bow and cane. The print is captioned in English and French. I believe Ottawa refers to the Odawa tribe. The blue on the blanket is bright and lovely. This print is from a rare folio of prints published by print maker Thomas Jefferys in the year 1772. The Native American prints were included in the fourth volume of Jefferys work "A collection of the dresses of different nations, ancient and modern". Jefferys began this work in 1752 with the first volume. This print was the fourth volume released in 1772. These prints show a very early, prior to the revolutionary war, European view of Native American life. This is an exceedingly rare folio - the only comparable editions that I could find are held in the British Museum and the New York public archives. The Illustrations were by Anthony Walker, Engraved by Charles Gringnion. These prints have turned up from time to time in a black and white re-print, but not in these painstakingly hand-colored prints made from etched copper plates. The size is quite large for a hand colored print as well. The page measures approximately 13.5 x 9.5 inches. Printed on a very nice French paper.
