Description: Up for sale is a 1776 copy of "A TREATISE ON FOREST TREES" by William Boutcher.The author was the son of a successful landscape gardener who supplied plants and advised on the designs of landscape for, amongst others, the Duke of Argyll at Inveraray Castle, Argyllshire, Scotland in 1721, and for the Earl of Stair at Castle Kennedy, in 1822. Boutcher jr, who was a nurseryman at the Comely-Garden, Edinburgh gives advice and "plain directions for removing most of the valuable kinds of Forest-Trees, to the height of thirty feet and upwards, with certain success; and, on the same principles, (with as certain success) for transplanting Hedges of sundry kinds, which will at once resist Cattle: to which are added, Directions for the Disposition, Planting, and Culture of Hedges, by observing which, they will be handsomer and stronger Fences in five years, than they now usually are in ten" (title-page). The trees discussed include a surprising number of species from North America, principally from Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, Canada and the West Indies: Elms, Ashes, Plane Trees, Maples, oaks, Hornbeams, Walnuts (or Hickory) Trees, the Chinquapin, a whole chapter on the Virginian Tulip tree, and another on the Tacamahaca Tree, Acacias, or Locust Tree in the West Indies, Poplars, Birch Trees, the Virginian wild Service, with leaves like the Strawberry tree, Judas Trees, Pine Trees, Spruce Firs, Cedars, Cypresses, and Hawthorns.This book is in very good condition. Rubbing/chipping/shelf wear to the boards around the edges, corners and at the top/bottom of the spine panel. Some tape repairs to the corners. Rubbing/chipping/shelf wear to the front/rear board panels as well as the spine panel. One small piece of tape on the rear board. Front board a little bowed. The front/rear hinges are strong and text block is tight within the binding. Previous owner's bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. The number 5/5 written in the top corner of the first free endpaper and a short notation on the second blank page. Text block is free of any foxing. There are no other marks, tears, bookplates or writing in this book. Please review all photos for your best idea of the condition of this book.
