Description: Corderius’ dialogues have been a staple of the classroom from the 1560s through the late 1700s with a stated goal of giving the student of Latin the tools to converse accurately in Latin during an era when Latin was a “living language”, that is, used for actual conversations between those who might be from different countries. There was a time when all educated people spoke conversational Latin. The colloquies are the work of Mathurin Cordier, a Swiss teacher and linguist of the 1500s. John Clarke was a schoolmaster also who translated Corderius’ works. This particular copy has lost its front board but has been nicely covered in a plain brown wrapper with a cardboard insert. This has protected the title page a little although it has had some sort of tape or clear wrap to augment lost corners and the gutter edge, a process which seems to have been repeated at the rear. The preface has a pretty decorative heading; otherwise a straightforward academic text “printed at Boston by Isaiah Thomas and Company”. Good Condition: 12mo: modern paper wrap replacing original binding with vestiges of leather spine still attached: repaired title page at front; repaired back wrap: foxing and discoloration due to age: decorative flourish at top of preface: occasional loose page: occasional repaired page with same material as used for title holding loose page in place: spotted edges: “Corderii Colloquiorum Centuria Selecta: or, a Select century of the Colloquies of Corderius with an English Translation as Literal as Possible Designed for the Use of Beginners in the Latin Tongue”: by John Clarke, late Master of the Publick Grammar School in Hull: a NEW edition: printed in Boston by Isaiah Thomas and Company: 1789.
