1793 HOUSE OF STUART Scottish History SCOTLAND Richard Hay MONARCHY

Description: [History] ~ [STUART, House of]. HAY, Richard An essay on the origine of the royal family of the stewarts.. Edinburgh. Printed by William Adams...1722. Reprinted by Stewart, Ruthven & Co., 1793, . . Quarto. [4], 41pp, [1]. Without final blank leaf. Later black moroccobacked red cloth boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. A trifle rubbed and marked. Scattered spotting. Contemporary manuscript note to recto of front blank flyleaf: Cha. Stuart / 1793 / Only thirty copies of this printed'. The second and final printing of Augustinian canon and antiquary Richard Hay's (16611736?) defence of the Scottish origins of the House of Stuart, first published in 1722 in response to a contemporary dissertation that had asserted the royal family's Irish roots. The manuscript note in the present copy regarding the limited print run (if accurate) would account for paucity of surviving copies of this reprint; ETSC records copies at only four locations in the British Isles (BL, Glasgow, NLS, and Oxford), and a further two in North America (Folger and Huntington). The first edition is equally scarce.
