John Flaxman was an English sculptor, illustrator, designer, and leading artist of the Neoclassical style in Britain and Europe. Flaxwell is best remembered for iconic flat, clean and linear style employed within his book illustrations that contributed much to the spread of Neoclassicism in England. Due to the popularity and vast influence of this style Flaxwell was commissioned by notable names such as Georgiana Hare-Naylor, Thomas Hope and Lady Spencer to design illustrations for the works of a variety of classical authors and poets, including Aeschylus, as seen within this copy.
