Description: 1795 London, Middlesex, 1 penny token, approx. 33 mm dia. On the obverse is "T. HALL, CITTY ROAD, NEAR FINSBURY SQUARE, LONDON, 1795". Around the border is "THE FIRST ARTIST IN EUROPE FOR PRESERVING BIRDS, BEASTS, etc". The reverse shows around the border "SIR JEFFERY DUNSTAN, MAYOR OF GARRAT". In the center is a figure that the standard references describe as a "deformed dwarf". He was a traveling dealer in wigs, and used what he could make to be a comic and bawdy appearance to make himself a very popular figure. He would walk about with no hat, shirt opened, knock-kneed with wigs hanging about on himself. The piece is lettered on the edge with "WE PROMISE TO PAY ONE PENNY ON DEMAND". The piece is a nice, original brown color on both sides. The obverse is slightly weakly struck in the center, so the very center lettering is slightly weak. There are a few light, normal type contact marks in the same area. The reverse shows a few light, normal contact marks in the fields. Overall condition is nice and attractive, especially for the large size copper.
