Description: Rare Antique American Silver Spoon by Joseph Barton of Stockbridge MA, dated 1799, handsome monogram AA. According to AmericanSilverSmiths.org by Wm Erik Voss, Joseph Barton was active in Stockbridge MA, where the famous historic Red Lion Inn located, and was the master of several apprentices around 1799. The silver spoon has a coffin head design on the handle, with a handsome monogram of 2 connected A's on the front, and engraved 1799 in addition to the maker's stamp mark of JBARTON, similar to the one recorded by Voss on the back. The coffin heads design has the corner at the ends cut out in a slight circular fashion. The silver spoon retains tarnish consistent with age, and there is a small green deposit on the spoon. The spoon has a length of 6", a width of 1", weights less than 1 oz. A rare and elegant early American silver for your collection.
