Description: Late 1600s English Copper-Bronze Sun Sundial "Night Cometh" - Extremely Rare ! "Night Cometh" "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work" John 9:4. This motive and Sundial was very popular and therefore copied for centuries to come. Approximately 23.35 cm (8 inches) in height with the IIX or XII by rotation being on top, Night Cometh on the bottom, and approximately 20.4 cm (8 inches) from side to side with the Roman numeral VII in the center left side, and V in the center right side. The bent pointer shadow caster is approximately 7.7 cm (3 inches) in height. The Sundial is made from copper bronze and much of the patina is fortunately still present, which makes it quiet a rare find since most were exposed to weathering, oxidation, cleaning and deterioration. The Sundial gnomon (pointer or shadow castor) is bent at the tip as can be seen in the provided images, who said time can not be bent ? And in this case leaning towards the night, intentional ? Regardless this Sundial is a most charming original Sundial that I have had luck to encounter. Extremely rare to find one that is original, this old, and in such good condition containing an engraving of the smiling sun ! Would make a great gift or addition to any collection ! Please feel free to check out my other Beautiful Historical Sundial ! For the year of our Lord 2017 I wish you a Very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year ! Be Consistently Good & God Bless !
