Description: AMERICAN Pewter Chalice by Heyne Description: This is one of only a few lidded pewter chalices known to be made by the famous American pewterer: Johann Christopher Heyne. This chalice has impeccable provenance. The chalice was part of a communion set that was extensively documented by two pewter experts, John Evans and Ledlie Lauglin in 1931. The results of their research is documented and photographed in the Pewter Collectors Club of America Bulletin, Dec. 1968, Vol.5, p.211, fig.2. We also have the 18th century English tulip-shaped tankard by John Townsend that was with this communion set and pictured in the above reference. The chalice was originally donated to the Himmel Church by George Heinrich Reitz in 1776. You can see all the documentation that will be included by doing a ‘google’ on the reference. Only a few of Heyne’s chalices are marked and only eight known examples are lidded. This is a rare opportunity to own an American pewter treasure that has full documentation and guaranteed. Most of the existing examples are in American museums.
