Description: Up for sale is a Balinese hand carved wood figure of the winged Demon Wilmana, hand carved in the 19th century, modelled as a standing winged figure, with ruthful demonic expression wearing an elaborate headdress and jewels, with significant original polychrome and gilding. This statue was made in Bali and was used as a guardian for a house or temple. Wilmana is the riding animal of the evil Lord Ravana from the epic Ramayana story in Hinduism. In this story, the evil Ravana kidnapped Sita and takes her with him to his castle, while riding Wilmana. Wilmana and Ravana are the opposites of Garuda and Vishnu, the holy eagle and the supreme god in Hinduism. Statues depicting Wilmana are very rare. There are a lot of details on this carving, such as the base, the jewelry and tattoos as well as the elaborate costuming on this intricate carving. The statue is carved from one solid piece of redwood, except for the extensions of the wings. Both wings are detachable and can be taken off for safe shipping. There are some cracks in the wood due to age and drying over the years. I found one small chip in the wood on one of the extension wings and one on the back (see photos). I think it had a kris at one time due to the hole in the right hand being empty.Item measures: 12"W x 19"H x 6"DWeight is just under 8 lbs. The pictures are of the item you will receive.
