Here is an original rare newspaper entitled Philidelphia Gazette dated Feb 16, 1804. In it on page 3 is an article about the death of Joseph Priestley! What is really amazing is some of the things that Joseph Priestley said on his death bed including: The day before he died, he had someone read out loud John Chapter 11 and asked him to stop reading after verse 45 (this is just after Jesus resurrected Lazarus). Joseph Priestley then dwelt for some time on the advantage he had derived from reading the scriptures daily, and recommended the practice, saying, that it would prove a source of the purist pleasure." Note: This is still excellent advice today. After he said evening prayers with his grand children he exhorted them to continue to show love for each other and added, "I am going to sleep as well as you; for death is only a good long sound sleep in the grave; and we will meet again." Note: It appears that he believed in the resurrection onto Earth and did not believe in an immortal soul or a burning hell. There are many other interesting detals in the article and it basically makes you feel as if you were there listening in to his last advice before falling asleep in death. He wrote that the truth taught by Jesus and his followers was later corrupted by falsehoods—including the false teaching of the Trinity, the erroneous belief that the soul is immortal, and the worship of images, which is actually condemned in the Bible. Priestley’s religious ideas and his support of the American and French revolutions incensed his fellow Englishmen. In 1791, a mob destroyed his home and laboratory, and Priestley eventually fled to the United States. Although particularly remembered for his scientific discoveries, Joseph Priestley believed that learning about God and His purpose was of “superior dignity and importance.” TRUTH OR TRADITION? Priestley discovered that many traditional religious beliefs contradict what the Bible says. Consider a few examples: Tradition: Jesus is equal to God. Bible Truth: Christ Jesus said: “The Father is greater than I am.”—John 14:28. Tradition: The soul is immortal. Bible Truth: “The soul who sins is the one who will die.”—Ezekiel 18:4. Sir Isaac Newton, one of the greatest scientists in all of history, refuted the Trinity in his writings and is sometimes called a Socinian. Joseph Priestley, famous chemist and the discoverer of oxygen, was also called a Socinian. 1986 Awake 9/8 p. 24 The Sanctity of Blood—An Ancient Controversy In the 12th century, blood was still widely viewed as sacred. For example, clergyman Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) wrote: “In A.D. 1125, Otho, bishop of Bamberg, was instrumental in converting the Pomeranians . . . It deserves to be noticed, that, among the instructions given to these people relating to their new religion, they were forbidden to eat blood, or animals that had been strangled; from which it appears that at this time, in Europe as well as in all other parts of the Christian world, such food was thought to be unlawful.” 1985 Watchtower 4/15 p. 13 Be Faithful to God “Who Looks On in Secret” God’s Law on Blood Recognized as Still Valid JOSEPH PRIESTLEY (1733-1804) is most noted as the scientist who discovered oxygen, but he was also a theologian. He wrote: “The prohibition to eat blood, given to Noah, seems to be obligatory on all his posterity.” As to the claim that the Christian prohibition on blood was only temporary, Priestley added: “There is no intimation, or hint, of its being temporary, or any mention made of a time when the prohibition was to cease. . . . If we interpret this prohibition of the apostles by the practice of the primitive Christians, who can hardly be supposed not to have rightly understood the nature and extent of it, we cannot but conclude, that it was intended to be absolute and perpetual.” --- This rare newspaper is in VERY NICE condition.
