Description: "Triclinium." A sepia aquatint, engraved by L Caracciolo. Sheet number VI. A genuine antique engraving from a set of Picturesque Views, published in Rome in 1819 under the title "Suite des Vues Pittoresques des Ruines de Pompeii et un Precis Historique de la Ville avec un Plan des Foures qui ont ete faites jusqu'en Fevrier 1819." The artist was Henry Wilkins (1767 - 1847). A fine aquatint, the sepia colour tone conveying well the heat of Italy and the site. The Triclinium was a dining room. Pompeii was buried during a volcanic eruption in AD79. It was rediscovered c1738, and just prior to the publication of these prints by Wilkins, much progress had been made in excavating the site when Italy was under the rule of France 1806 - 1816. The site would have been high on the list of those Georgian aristocrats who were expected to embark on a Grand Tour of Europe. Such tourists can be seen on many of these engravings, though the site is delightfully uncrowded! One of a number of such engravings from the set I am listing on ebay. Please see my other items. Size: the sheet is smaller than some in the set, and measures approx. 30cms x 21cms.Condition: The print is in a good condition. Postage: £4.00 within the UK. £10.00 to Europe, £15.00 to USA.I have other antique prints, maps, books, etc. in my ebay shop. Please see my other items.
