BACKGROUND INFORMATION: An Ancient Town in the Confederation of the Cinque Ports. Seven centuries ago, Winchelsea was a town of several thousand people and a major Channel port, its ships the terror of the Narrow Seas. Today, Winchelsea sits quietly on its hill, gazing at the now-distant sea, but echoes of its colourful history still resonate from the ancient buildings and stone town gates whilst the magnificent church and traces of the ancient boundary ditches etched into the surrounding landscape, hint at its former eminence. St Thomas' Church. Winchelsea's splendid 14th century Church, dedicated to St Thomas the Martyr, is the venue for many of the events organised by the local organisations throughout the year. Today only the chancel and chapels remain and form the church. The church was built at the same time as the town itself but we cannot be sure whether the whole of it was ever built. Today only the chancel and chapels remain in use. The transepts are in ruins and there is no evidence to be seen of a nave. Please explore my ebay shop for more antique prints.
