Description: 1824 Tricolor 3x5 Flag - Printed 1824 Tricolor 3x5 Flag - Printed General Council’s “1824” Privateer Flag Approved by the Provisional Government (General Council) of Texas under Henry Smith on November 29th, 1835, for use by registered privateers in the service of Texas and operating under Letters of Marquee and Reprisal. The flag was a modification of Philip Dimmits flag of October 27th, 1835 using the Mexican National Flag which was a tri-color of green, white, and red. The Mexican Eagle was replaced with the numbers 1824 representing the date of the Mexican Federal Constitution and allegiance to that document as many Texians wished for peace with Mexico. So the 1824 Tricolor was effectively a conciliation flag as Stephen F. Austin negotiated with Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, (the Mexican President at the time) for more fair treatment of the Texian settlers and adherence to the constitution. Most Texians obeyed the 1824 Constitution while Santa Anna did not, which was the root cause of the revolution. Navy vessels also flew this flag until the Texas Navy Flag was approved in December of 1836. It was also believed that this flag flew over the Alamo when it fell on March 6, 1836, and has also been referred to as the Alamo Flag. However, It was neither captured nor reported in official journals at the time. Many historians now believe that the 1824 Tricolor was not present at the Alamo for the reasons stated above as well as the fact that the pro-Mexican flag would not have been flown after the revolutionary independence faction of Texians had won out over the pro-Mexican Federalist sympathizers and hostilities had begun between Mexico and the Texas revolutionary movement. This is a reproduction of the 1824 Tricolor Flag, of which there were many produced and likely several different dimensions. The artwork is visible on both sides of the flag. The lettering reads right on one side only. Made of printed 100 denier polyester which is a lightweight material that will fly nicely in the slightest breeze.
