DATE PRINTED: 1829, dated on the print. SIZE: The printed area including titles of the view is approximately 16 x 11.5 cm (6.25 x 4.5 inches) with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by John Rogers from a study by N. Whittock, published by I. T. Hinton, 4 Warwick Square, London, 1830. Nathaniel Whittock (1791-1860) was Lithographic printer and engraver to the University of Oxford. PROVENANCE: A plate published in "A new and complete history of the county of York" by Thomas Allen, published by I.Hinton, issued in parts 1828-1833. TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Georgian 'Commercial Buildings' were designed by architect John Clark and built at a cost of £28,000 in 1829. Its eye-catching columns were 40 feet high and inside was a reading room stocked with daily newspapers, available to read in exchange for an annual subscription.
