Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Commercial Buildings, Leeds.", Yorkshire. A view of the Commercial Buildings on the corner of Park Row and Boar Lane. DATE PRINTED: 1829, dated on the print. SIZE: The printed area including titles of the view is approximately 16 x 11.5 cm (6.25 x 4.5 inches) with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by John Rogers from a study by N. Whittock, published by I. T. Hinton, 4 Warwick Square, London, 1830. Nathaniel Whittock (1791-1860) was Lithographic printer and engraver to the University of Oxford. PROVENANCE: A plate published in "A new and complete history of the county of York" by Thomas Allen, published by I.Hinton, issued in parts 1828-1833. TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian paper is subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated. Some age spots in the margins. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Georgian 'Commercial Buildings' were designed by architect John Clark and built at a cost of £28,000 in 1829. Its eye-catching columns were 40 feet high and inside was a reading room stocked with daily newspapers, available to read in exchange for an annual subscription.
