Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Kirkstall Abbey.", Yorkshire. DATE PRINTED: 1829, dated on the print. SIZE: The printed area including titles of the view is approximately 16 x 11.5 cm (6.25 x 4.5 inches) with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by John Rogers from a study by N. Whittock, published by I. T. Hinton, 4 Warwick Square, London, 1830. Nathaniel Whittock (1791-1860) was Lithographic printer and engraver to the University of Oxford. PROVENANCE: A plate published in "A new and complete history of the county of York" by Thomas Allen, published by I.Hinton, issued in parts 1828-1833. TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Kirkstall Abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery in Kirkstall, north-west of Leeds city centre in West Yorkshire, England. It is set in a public park on the north bank of the River Aire. It was founded c.1152. It was disestablished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. The picturesque ruins have been drawn and painted by artists such as J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Girtin and John Sell Cotman. Kirkstall Abbey was acquired by Leeds Corporation as a gift from Colonel North and opened to the public in the late 19th century. The gatehouse became a museum.
