1829 Blackwood's Magazine Noctes, Charles Lamb, Caroline Southey, Walter Scott

Description: Hard to find issue, this is a single complete number of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine for May 1829. This one neatly rescued by me just now from an old damaged bound volume of the monthly. One of the most outstanding early issues of the magazine. See photo for complete contents. 135 pages includes nine pages of recent English and Scottish military appointments, births, bankruptcies, marriages and deaths. Some highlights I find include: Although appearing here anonymously, Sir Walter Scott contributes an eight page historical essay headed "Lord Pitsligo." One of the few contributions by Sir Walter to his hometown magazine! This follows the publication of Alexander Lord Pitsligo's Edinburgh and London published Thoughts Concerning Man's Condition and Duties in this Life, and his Hopes in the World to Come. John Wilson's notable narrative set in Edinburgh's Buchanan Lodge at "four in the afternoon": "Noctes Ambrosianae XLIII." Two new poems, also rare contributions to Blackwood's, from the pen of poet, editor, and all around literary man Charles Lamb. The Christening and For a Young Lady's Album are here first printed. Irish journalist William Johnstone's "Sketches on the Road to Ireland," Part 2 (of 5). John Hardman's "Sketches of Italy and the Italians." Chapters 26-31. See photo for headings. The fourth monthly installment (of 7) of journalist William Mudford's serial narrative, First and Last. The conclusion to Caroline Bowles Southey's "Chapters on Churchyards." There were 18 installments of her stories published by Blackwood's between 1824 and 1829. They also published these works in book form (2 volumes) in 1829. Ms. Southey was Poet Laureate Robert Southey's second wife. Mary Margaret Busk's "The Duke De Rovigo and Co." A full page of new verse from the pen of "Delta" (David Macbeth Moir) headed A Shadow of Truth. Some author contributions above are drawn from the Wellesley Index, I, 30.
