Description: Colloquial Phrases and Dialogues in German and English on Every Topic Necessary to Maintain Conversation With Directions for Pronunciation by Joseph Ehrenfried 1834 / 1835 published by Hogan & Thompson, Philadelphia VERY EARLY, VERY RARE original German English phrase book from the 1830s in America for German immigrants and Americans wanting to communicate with them This book was purchased in Hagerstown, Maryland, and a handwritten note in English about a medical patient places it in the Hagerstown area (Isaac Feigley, who lived in the area in the 1840s); the name of the owner is written on the cover (on the paper sticker in ink) and all I can make out is "William" Beautiful book illustrating what life was like at this time -- an entire page talks about making a fire, keeping a fire going, and another talks about transport by steamer or stage (trains were not a going concern yet!) And what's really lovely is the flowery speech in English for polite sayings There is also an almanac section discussing the character of each state and famous Americans. It is strange to have a book that does not include western states (they were not yet part of the US!). A real piece of Americana, particularly if you have German ancestry. They may have used such a book to communicate in the New World. 228 pages
