Description: THE PENNY MAGAZINE April 30-May 31, 1832 Suspension Bridges This is a vintage paper which is over 190 years old. It is printed in a small format, measuring 7.5 by 11 in size, and is 8 pages long. The issue came from a bound volume and has typical slight disbinding marks at the spine, but is otherwise in excellent condition, with only a bit of light toning from age. This particular paper is a Monthly Supplement issue to the regularly weekly editions of the periodical. The paper has a one and one-half page feature article on SUSPENSION BRIDGES. It summarizes the history of these architectural structures, and gives the details of a bridge that was soon to be built over the Avon river. It is illustrated by a nice wood engraving measuring 3.7x5.5 inches in size, plus a smaller woodcut of a Design for the Gateways to the Bridge over the Avon. The paper notes: We avail ourselves of the permission of Mr. Brunel to copy his beautiful lithographic engravings of a Suspension Bridge about to be erected over the Avon, at Clifton. The above plate will furnish some idea of the beauty of the situation of this intended bridge; and the following particulars will give a notion of the boldness of the undertaking. The issue also has a 2-page article on Criminal Trials, and a front page story on Highgate Church, accompanied by an illustration. ************************* Background on this publication: The Penny Magazine was a weekly 8-page paper put out by Londons Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Throughout the 1830s, an American edition was very popular in the United States, only to dwindle into extinction during the following decade. The paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history. The paper was compact in size, and every issue was illustrated with several fine woodcut engravings. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
