1835: Lincolnshire DUCK HUNTING; Egyptian antiquities, British Museum; goldfish

Description: THE PENNY MAGAZINE Feb. 14, 1835 Duck hunting, Lincolnshire Egyptian Room, British Museum This is an issue of a weekly London paper which is over 180 years old! It is printed in a small format, measuring 7.5 x 11 inches in size, and is 8 pages long. It has some minor foxing (browning spots) from age, but is in Fine condition overall. It was printed on a high quality rag-content paper, with its pages clean and bright, and free from any tears or stains. The issue came from a bound volume, and has typical slight disbinding marks at its spine. The highlight of the paper is a two-page article on WILD DUCKS, which is illustrated with a great half-page wood engraving of Method of Capturing Wild Ducks in the Fens of Lincolnshire. The accompanying text is over 200 lines long, and is the completion of an article from an earlier issue. This story begins with a description of the hut-shooting method of duck hunting pursued in France, but the majority of the text is on a superior British system of duck hunting: . . . But all the methods we have described, which more of less involve much watching and fatigue, are vastly inferior to the decoys used in England, particularly in the fens of Lincolnshire. It describes the construction of a ditch, and elaborate tunnel-net system for ensnaring the birds, and how dogs are employed in working the ducks toward the trap. Tame ducks are also used for the purpose of leading the way into the pipe. Hence the term decoy-ducks. By this manner, five or six dozen have sometimes been taken at one drift. The article concludes with a paragraph on an unusual method of raising ducks in China, in which flocks are let loose to feed in the wild, but are trained to return to their masters individual duck-boats. ****************** The front page of the paper is taken up entirely by a large wood engraving of THE EGYPTIAN ROOM IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM, which is accompanied on the next page by 75 lines of text on this new addition to the British Museum, built to house antiquities brought from Egypt. Other articles are on USES OF TIN (one half page); GOLD FISH (75 lines); and OLD METHOD OF TAKING HONEY FROM THE HIVE (50 lines). ************************** Background on this publication: The Penny Magazine was a weekly 8-page paper put out by Londons Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Throughout the 1830s, an American edition was very popular in the United States, only to dwindle into extinction during the following decade. The paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history. The paper was compact in size and was usually illustrated with several fine woodcut engravings. 184 [gsp12076] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
