On the 30th day of October 1838, your committee met agreeable to order and pursuant of being again attended by the agents of the towns of Williston & Essex and the petitioners proceeded to examine the places pointed out by the agents of the towns of Williston & Essex aforesaid for the erection of a bridge. And after duly viewing & examining all such places, the committee were of opinion that, taking all things into consideration, that the place pointed out by the petitioners in their petitions had a decided preference. They therefore order & direct that the said towns of Williston & Essex shall erect a bridge over Onion river between the said towns of Williston & Essex at the place where the last toll bridge was erected. And they further order & direct that the expenses of building said bridge be borne by the said towns of Williston & Essex in proportion to their respective grand lists for the year 1838. All which is respectfully submitted. Committee, Jan 17, 1840 Your Meech This document is a formal order regarding the construction of a bridge between the towns of Williston and Essex over Onion River, specifying the division of costs based on their respective grand lists. To the Honorable County Court Next to be holden at Burlington within & for the County of Chittenden on the last Tuesday but one in March 1839. The undersigned committee to whom the matters in the foregoing rule were referred beg leave to report: That they duly notified all parties interested that the committee would meet at Henry Stanton’s inn in Essex on the 21st day of September 1838 at ten o’clock in the forenoon for the purpose of performing the duties assigned them in the foregoing rule. That the committee met agreeable to said notice, and the petitioners, as well as the towns of Williston & Essex were present by their respective agents & attorneys. The committee being duly sworn & attended by the parties aforesaid proceeded to & did duly view & examine the premises where the said petitioners had prayed to have a bridge erected in their petition. After having completed such examination the towns of Williston & Essex suggested three other places on said river dividing the towns of Williston & Essex more suitable for a bridge & more commodious to the public than the place pointed out by the petitioners.
