Description: An authentic smooth medium brown example of this rare overdate in a certified PCGS holder as 1839/6 in GD-6. A choice example for the grade. Made from an 1836 die that was left over with plain hair cords. The overdate was skillfully done by a mint engraver and utilized the reverse of the Silly Head variety that does not have a center dot making a clear link to 1839 cents. The early die state before the obverse crack develops in the obverse field. Many examples in the lower grades are unable to obtain a certified grade due to defects! This coin is an exception. The red book values in the 2025 edition are $750 in GD-4 and $1,500 in VG-8. Perhaps it would have a value of $850 in GD-6.
