Description: 1840s era Temperance Pledge Medalet: All Hail Our Country's Freedom, Bunker Hill... Temperance medalet described in the McGilvray Auction (1862) as "Rare". It was also listed in Bushnells (1858) catalog (item # 11). Seldom available in the market. I noticed a dark, worn example sold on eBay between $ 475 - 675 in November 2022 via a best offer. Elsewhere, an online search indicates a worn one had sold for around $ 900. Typically holed - as is always seen. This is likely one of the top specimens known. Obverse: Eagle with outstretched wings behind union shield with "Bunker Hill" inscribed above the vertical bars. Eagle holds banner inscribed "E Pluribus Unum" in both beak and right claw. Other claw holds five arrows. Above eagle: "All Hail Our Countries Freedom". Below eagle: "The Patriots of 1775". Reverse: Wreath with: "Temperance Celebration" above, and in the center of the wreath is inscribed: "We / Agree To / Abstain From / The Use of All / Intoxicating / Liquors / As A Beverage". Note: I wouldn't be surprised if this were a mule. The central phrase is kind of common and the die looks older than the obverse. Specifications: Brass (rd), 26 mm dia., 1.5 mm thk., plain edge, 7.1 gms., mushy dentilated border. Condition: Very choice, reverse corrosion spot on rim is noted for accuracy. Light centers on both sides. Bold strike. Looks original and unfussed, also unlikely worn as there is no wear at the hole and uncarried as a pocket piece. Unfortunately it is not in a NGC certifiable category. If it were, I would have had it certified. Issuer/Sponsor: Unknown. Probably a local temperance society to promote the anti-alchohol cause to the public. The Mass. Historical Society believes it was likely made in 1842. Note: the Bunker Hill Monument was completed and opened to the public in 1843. Manufacturer: Unknown, but from its appearance probably made by the Scovill Company (Waterbury, Conn). Shipping for the US buyer is $ 20.00 via USPS. Sorry, no international shipping on this item. Please ask questions before placing bid or buying. Also, check out my other listings - thanks.
