Description: 1840's, United States Pair of (2) "Sands Medals" one each of silver and a bronze. Daniel Sands was the founder and Supreme Leader of the "Sons Of Temperance" in 1842, he was an abolitionist, a Women's Suffrage supporter, and he died in 1853. The obverse shows a facing portrait of Mr. Sands, with "Sands Medal" around. The reverse has a wreath, "Awarded To", and "Perseverantia Omnia Vincit (Perseverance Conquers) around, intended to be a Temperance Award, with a space for engraving in the center. There is no engravers name, nor makers name, but obviously American. The medals are each 28 mm in diameter, and in almost uncirculated condition. Likely the medals were struck in the 1840's, very rarely offered for sale.
