Description: Newton's Principia. The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, by Sir Isaac Newton; Translated into English by Andrew Motte. To which is added, Newton's System of the World; With a Portrait taken from the Bust in the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. First American Edition, Carefully Revised and Corrected, with a Life of the Author, by N. W. Chittenden. New York: Published by Daniel Adee, 107 Fulton Street, 1848. 4, [v]-vii, [9]-61, 1 leaf, [lxvii]-lxix, 1 leaf, [73]-581pp., frontispiece portrait. Newton scholar I. Bernard Cohen writes in his 1970 article on "The American Editions of Newton's Principia" in Harvard Library Bulletin that this state is the true first printing of the First American Edition, previous bibliographers having incorrectly inferred the existence of an 1846 printing from the 1846 copyright date. Later binding and endpapers with some wear and bumps. Pages foxed throughout, often heavily; most of the textblock affected by a patch of dampstain, mostly marginal but intruding slightly into text on last few pages; yellowing, minor blemishes. Fair to Good.
