Description: This is a rare, true first printing copy of "UNCLE TOM'S CABIN - or, Life Among the Lowly" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Volume I only (of a two volume set). 1852 1st edition, 1st state (with all points); John P. Jewett & Company, Boston / Jewett, Proctor & Worthington, Cleveland. All three full-page illustrations by Hammatt Billings are present and securely attached. Exceedingly scarce true first printing from the initial print run of only 5,000 copies with all first printing points present: no printing designation indicated on the title page; "Hobart & Robbins" stereotype notice on the copyright page; "spilt" (later changed to "spiled") on page 42, line 1; no attributions to illustrator Hammatt Billings on the three illustrations; "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the Year 1851, by Harriet Beecher Stowe" stated on the copyright page. The first print run of 5,000 copies sold out in only a few days, with 3,000 copies selling on the first day alone. Copies from the second print run of 5,000 are indicated as such with "Tenth Thousand" stated on the title page. Bound in the original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, and a gilt illustration on the front cover. This copy has its condition flaws (please see detailed condition report), but nevertheless a rare, desirable copy of this enormously influential novel. Upon being introduced to Stowe in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln was reported to have commented that she was "the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war."
