The Angels in The House regards his courtship with Emily Augusta Andrews and The Espousals eulogises her. Patmore believed Andrews to be the perfect woman and The Angel in the House was the first part of this work, which eventually became four instalments. The first edition of both works. This work starts with a preface where the poet, Felix Vaughan, tells his wife he is to write a poem on her. The account begins in his youth where he meets Honoria Churchill. Scarce of these two first editions to be found together. No author attributed to title pages, though poet is known as Coventry Patmore. CONDITION In brown cloth bindings with paper spine labels. Held in a modern slipcase. Externally, generally smart with heavy rubbing to the head and tail of spines and to the extremities. Loss to both spine labels due to rubbing. Small loss to the extremities of The Espousals. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown of The Espousals, Crosthwaite and Co. Prior owner's signature to the recto of front endpaper, Edward Knowles. Slipcase is in lovely condition with minor shelfwear. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Small loss to top edge of the contents to The Angels in the House, not affecting text. Pages are age toned, particularly to the edges, with scattered spots throughout. FINE slipcase.
