Description: I have here for sale a RARE book entitled THE RUSSIAN SHORES OF THE BLACK SEA IN THE AUTUMN OF 1852 with a Voyage down the Volga and a Tour through the Country of the Don Cossacks by Laurence Oliphant. It is a third edition, revised and enlarged, published in 1854 by William Blackwood and Sons. The book has 33 b/w engravings in text, plus an enlarged map of the Crimea showing the Author's route. Laurence Oliphant was a British author, international traveller, and diplomat. He "journeyed from St. Petersburg to Moscow and then down the Volga to enlighten the world on the menace of Russia. In the book he describes places and people in an informative way, especially the long journey down the Volga River, with its peculiar means of transportation and the peoples along its banks. (Nerhood, 242). In August 1852 he started with Mr. Oswald Smith for a visit to St. Petersburg, thence to Nijni-Novgorod, and ultimately to the Crimea. He published this account of part of the journey, 'The Russian Shores of the Black Sea in the autumn of 1852, and a Tour through the Country of the Don Cossacks' at the end of 1853. The Approach of the Crimean war gave special interest to this book, which soon reached a fourth edition. Gilt lettering and blind embossing to the spine. Bumped corners and board edges. Slight darkening to the top edge. Bookplate to front endpaper.
