Description: The Congressional Globe: Containing the Debates, Proceedings, Laws, Etc., of the First and Second Sessions, Thirty-Fourth Congress by John C. Rives, 2 Parts, Printed at the Office of John C. Rives, City of Washington, 1856, 2240pp, 91pp, 76pp, 3/4 leather, 9 x 12”, 4to Fair condition. Wear and scuffing to boards with some sections of marbled paper on part I having been ripped off. Tips are bumped with exposed boards. Chipping and cracking to spines. Titles in gilt on spines. Marbled boards. Speckling to fore edges. Provenance on title pages. No known marginalia. Toning, age-staining, and tea-staining throughout textblocks. Rear hinge of part I is cracked. Front joint and hinge of part II is cracked and front board is starting to feel loose. Please see photos. The Congressional Globe is a record of the congressional debates from the Twenty-Third U.S. Congress in 1833 through the Forty-Second U.S. Congress in 1873. The Globe provides summaries of congressional debates in the early volumes, but in 1851, it started to provide more complete record of the debates. It is preceded by the Annals of Congress and the Register of Debates and succeeded by the Congressional Record. The set in this listing is for coverage of the first and second sessions, taking place from December 3, 1855 - August 18, 1856, and August 21, 1856 - August 30, 1856, respectively. There were numerous major events that took place during these sessions, such as elections being held for the first Kansas Territory legislature; the Kansas territorial legislature convened in Pawnee and began enacting pro-slavery laws; large-scale Bleeding Kansas violence began with events leading to the Wakarusa War between anti-slavery and pro-slavery forces; the Tintic War breaking out in Utah; and the American Party (Know-Nothings) nominating their first Presidential candidate, former President Millard Fillmore.
