1857 REV WM REDDY to JAMES COMFORT Violent Hemorrhage/New Leg Letter Oxford NY

Description: 1857 Letter from Rev. William Reddy to his brother-in-law James Comfort. Rev. Dr. William Reddy, 1813-1894, was the son of Timothy and Isabel (Scott) Reddy. Elizabeth Gildersleeve (Comfort) Reddy was his 2nd wife. They were married April 19, 1843 and Elizabeth died February 22, 1882. He was an influential minister in the Oneida Conference and Central New York Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.) addressed to his brother-in-law James Comfort Esq. Lanesboro Susq Co Pa. Letter reads: Oxford Nov. 7th 1857 Dear Bro James I rec'd your letter of Monday last relating to Mr. Newman's horse and I feel much obliged to you your interest in my behalf But I am greatly (?) to know what to do. Elizabeth & I had intended to be at your place last week but she has been prostrated near five weeks. She had been running down prior to that for several weeks (?) 4 weeks last Tuesday. She was prostrated with violent hemorrhage & she now just begins to sit up a little but is very weak. If she was well enough, we would come down. It is barely possible that she may be able to ride. If so we will come down a week from next Monday and if she cannot come, I think I will slip down at that time, I cannot come sooner on account of my Quarterly meetings and other matters. But it is extremely doubtful about my buying Mr. Newman's horse I will tell you. I must get me a new leg this year my old one is near giving out that will cost me $100. And I am to raise something to help pay the expenses of my brother to go to Europe to inquire into some patrimonial interests relating to our family and this will use up my spare means & a little more. I must also make some disposition of my "Dolly" if I could dispose of her I think I could raise money enough to pay the difference. Could you not help me to dispose of her? My hope would be if I come down that I could make some disposition of her with you or David or some one there, without which I could not purchase the other. I will drop a line to Mr. Newman. yours affectionately love to all William Reddy James Comfort EsqLetter on faintly lined light blue paper with remnants of wax seal, measures 7 3/4" x 12 1/2" and is in very good antique condition. Please see photos. Thank you!
