Description: ~~A Sound Copy of a Rare Book~~~ Might Lack the Last Leaf of the Index ~~ Athens, Georgia Provenance ~ An Historical Sketch of Slavery, from the Earliest Periods By Thomas R. R. Cobb Philadelphia and Savannah: T. & J. W. Johnson & Col [and] W. Thorne Williams,~ 1858 ~ ************************************************* Octavo. 300 pages, indexed. Hardcover bound in original taupe publisher's cloth. The binding shows some wear, uneven sunning and some damping but is sound. Corners bumped. Spine ends are frayed and chipping, especially at the foot of the sine. Hinges secure. Brown endpapers. The text block is sound, and the text is foxed. (Possibly lacks the final leaf of the Index; Howes lists 302 pages. The Index goes up through "Tyre", although it does not look like anything was removed). There is damping about the edges, heavier at the front and rear of the text block. There is heavy browning on pages 134/135 from some newspaper clippings had been laid in loosely (these are a poem, "A Drink to the Lees" by Maude Andrews and "A Famous Eulogy" pertaining to Robert E. Lee). One of the front flyleaves has a prior owner's ink stamp, and the blank leaf before the title page has an early owner's pencil inscription, "Anne J. Anderson / from her friend / J. C. Orr / Athens." The J.C. Orr appears to have be Dr. Josiah C. Orr of Athens, Georgia, although he was also known as a blacksmith. In 1859 he operated a blacksmith shop in Athens on the corner of Oconee and Foundry Streets. In 1860 he was listed in the Athens census as an "MD" and his loyalty oath in 1865 lists his occupation as a physician. In 1863 he applied to the Confederate Congress to become the postmaster of Athens and was approved. The author Thomas R. R. Cobb (1823-1862) was a lawyer and a reporter to the Supreme Court of Georgia (1849-1857), and his book, "An Inquiry into the Law of Negro Slavery" (also published in 1858) was one of the most sited pro-slavery legal treatises of its time This book constitutes the bulk of that book and seeks to show an historical precedent for the legality of slavery. Cobb also served in the Confederate Congress, where he was on the committee for drafting the Confederate Constitution. Additionally, he was a colonel in the Confederate Army. He was killed at the Battle of Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862.*****************************************We Always Accept Returns if the Item Does Not Match the Description.
