Description: Ammonites are a type of marine cephalopod mollusk from the subclass Ammonoidea. Their fossils show that the ammonites had spiral striped shells, at the end of which lived a tentacled animal. These sea creatures lived from 400 to 65 million years ago. They became extinct along with the dinosaurs, in the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction event. Their closest living relatives are the octopus, squid, cuttlefish and the Nautilus. Nine orders of Ammonoidea have been found and identified: five from the Palaeozoic Era and four from the Mesozoic Era. Evolution : Ammonites first appeared during the Early Devonian. They evolved from small, straight-shelled Bactridians, which were early nautiloids. They quickly evolved into a variety of shapes and sizes, including odd shapes such as hairpins.
