Description: This listing is for an early illustrated printing of "A Visit of St. Nicholas," undated but known to be 1860s. One of the rarest and most desirable of the early illustrated books, it is the first entry by McLoughlin and features the work of artist Thomas Nast, who began drawing Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly during this period in the 1860s. Santa is dressed in brown fur, rather than the later traditional red and white. Construction is softcover, 9.5 x 10.5 inches, with 12 cardstock pages including the inside covers. Fabulous chromatograph illustrations throughout, many full-page, with blank pages in between page illustrations. This 161 year old book is in surprisingly nice condition. The covers show moderate wear just a small chip on top and a short split. The pages are unusually clean and still attached. Early owners usually sewed the hinges of these books to keep the card pages together but this one has a cloth reinforcement. On consignment from a lifelong Christmas collector.
