Description: This 1860s American Civil War Confederate Soldier 1/6th Plate Tintype Photograph is in good condition overall but does show expected signs of age, handling and storage. The photograph appears to depict a Confederate soldier wearing a Richmond Depot style shell jacket along with two other jackets, the buttons of these garments appearing to have been hand-colored yellow. Each jacket has a slightly different tone but all three garments strongly appear to be gray in overall color. It is a strong possibility these additional jackets on top of the soldier's shell jacket were "props" and not actual owned field gear, such items were very popular in photographs of the period. The solder also wears a darker colored Kepi cap, another common practice of Confederate soldiers in earlier stages of the conflict. Very few other "clues" can be detected as to give hints to the identity or location of this image, though the backside of the image is clearly signed in pencil. It is difficult to make out clearly what is written but it appears to read "A XXXXX Picture," with the middle word being most difficult to decode. This "mystery" word appears to start with a letter "C" or possibly an "O," deeper research could certainly shed light on the matter. The tintype plate is in good condition overall and no obvious damage can be observed on the front or back sides. The backside of the frame has a handwritten note with some indicator of subject matter and past ownership, also noting the outer frame to be made of "solid gold." The frame has been tested and sadly it is not made of gold but could possibly be plated. The photograph case is still in good condition however it's spine is very fragile and is held together by only a few threads. The red velvet interior is clean and free from any stains rips or tears, strongly appearing to have been stored properly over the years. The outer leather covering is ornately decorated and retains most of it's original dark finish. The small locking clasp is intact and functions exactly as you would expect. Please examine the photographs carefully for the best description of condition.
