Description: A 2 3/4 inch tall beautiful RED RUBY flashed glass with a sun purpled AMETHYST colored base antique GETTYSBURG PENNSYLVANIA glass CUP with handle and dated 1863. Note that the BODY is flashed RUBY RED color but the bottom portion is a light PURPLE AMETHYST color. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE blown-glass figurine that dates WELL OVER 100 YEARS OLD old. Cup reads: "Gettysburg 1863". Condition: It is in super CLEAN CLEAN condition with just traces of age wear, nearly mint condition. Back in the day these little souvenirs were often won at small-town fairs, sold in small businesses or souvenir stands, or even sold during a large event, like a commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg where the event took place. This is a super nice and quite ornate little cup, in excellent condition for how old it is, well over a century old. As a side note, the bottom section and handle of this ornate little cup has an amethyst tint to it. You hear about old glass turning amethyst in the sunlight, here is how it works: The amethyst color that is in the base is the result of it being blown with glass that had manganese added to it. Manganese is a mineral that was pulverized and added to glass to make the glass crystal clear. Only clear glass from before 1915 had manganese in it. Then, when exposed to sunlight the manganese starts to oxidize and turns a nice amethyst or lavender color, the result of a chemical reaction. The longer it is in the sun light, the darker purple it turns. A glass item has to be old enough to begin with, as with few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1915 had manganese in it. With the start of WWI, manganese was no longer available as foreign imports decreased and domestic resources turned towards the war effort. NO MORE purple glass after 1915!
