Description: Carte-de-visite photograph of a young woman with a letter and envelope, by R.A. Lewis of New York, circa 1860s. The unidentified full seated portrait view shows an attractive young woman posing for her likeness in a photograph studio, seated in a Victorian chair, side to the camera. She wears a fancy Civil War era dress and holds a sheet of paper and an envelope in her hands. Was this a letter from her soldier husband? This should be a common image for this era, when letter writing had become ubiquitous among residents of the United States, North and South. But I don’t think I have ever come across a CDV showing both a letter and the mailing envelope. The carte-de-visite is in good to very good condition with minimal wear and soiling. The card has been trimmed down very slightly, at least on the left edge. The photograph exhibits very good tonal range and shows very good detail. A very nice letter writing related Civil War era image!
